Hi Jenna
This is all good news. From what I understand, in the States there is a good tax write-off for donations, and California might be the strongest state of all for this. Until other countries come up with a tax write off of this sort, it won't happen (in Canada and in Italy are two examples of which I know).
Thanks for your comment, let's hope we're in for some positive change! Alexandra

All interesting and important questions. It is hard to imagine how the arts might change if funding continues to be such a problem or gets worse. This is just one example, but despite enormous economic problems in California, I have noticed some positive changes in Northern CA (where I live). A new museum is going to open in 2016 on the UC Davis campus after Jan Shrem (vintner from Napa Valley) donated $10 million. There are lots of wineries collecting art and showing it for free to the public. The city of Napa began a public sculpture display that rotates work of CA artists every 15 months. The Crocker museum in Sacramento just reopened after a beautiful $100 million expansion, and people have been raving about the new space. So despite all the cuts the state has endured these last several years, the arts are still valued...

Un articolo da Arttrav. Non preoccuparti per i pochi commenti: la cultura non è popolare. Ma ti faccio i miei applausi :-)

Alexandra, what an interesting article, thank you.
I have to say that the Medici's and Michaelangelo were my first awakening and so my love of Art history was born. This in turn has led me to reading contiually for the last 3 years books on Medici money and patronage and all manner of books on the artists of Florence and Venice.

It is shortsighted indeed to underestimate the "value" the arts can bring to Italy and the value of the tourist £ it brings with it. To cut the budgets that the Arts have previously enjoyed does seem short sighted, but also understandable to a degree in the economic climate.

I, myself, as you know are travelling once again to Florence for that very reason to study and immerse ourselves into the artisitc heritage of Florence.

This has brought us an immense knowledge and understanding of Florentine and Italian history which has given us both such pleasure. We are happy to spend our hard earned £'s indulging our love of such pleasures, secure in the knowledge that the City can provide us with much learning and to fufil the need we have for learning .

It would be wonderful to think that there could exist in the present day such a thing as a garden of Lorenzo for the training of young artists or sculptors!! But that is just a pipe dream and not applicable to the modern age ? Or is it ! ?
