Female artist biographical film project

anguissola_oldwoman

Sofonisba Anguissola, Old Woman studying the alphabet with laughing girl (Florence Uffizi)

Students in my advanced seminar on “Women and the Arts in Early Modern Italy” have been assigned the production of a short film biography on a female artist of the Renaissance or Baroque period. They were asked to produce an informative, scholarly, and factually correct interpretation of an artist whose presence on the internet is minimal – hence not Artemisia Gentileschi. With this project we hope to increase awareness of the activity of female artists in the early modern period by making films and related resources available to the general public.

The three groups’ films on Lavinia Fontana, Sofonisba Anguissola, and Elisabetta Sirani can be viewed in separate posts.

Bibliographies are provided for further research and reading; we also highly recommend the resources available through the National Museum of Women in the Arts website.
