Usually we eat 2 friselle each at lunch in the summer at 12:30 or 1pm, especially at the beach, so we can swim again in the afternoon. Then yes, one might eat a few cookies at 6pm to hold out til dinner at 9pm. It's not all that light if you consider that the ingredients are similar to half a pizza or a small plate of pasta, in terms of amount of tomato used and portion of starch. That's me thinking like an American. It's not very balanced, though, and maybe this is where, Laura, you're hanging up... I agree that the real piatto unico should be better balanced, but then you know my diet... I probably don't eat anything balanced!

Yes, why not! And try the (not so healthy but real one-course meal) "Riso patate e cozze" from Taranto and "Melanzane (or Zucchine) parmesan" for the second edition of your book. PS I'm sure that Tommaso and Alexandra have a rich "merenda at 17.00 after eating just a frisella for lunch ;-)

I'd never argue with a pugliese on the traditional way to eat friselle! Yes, as an antipasto or spuntino is the usual thing--just as the traditional place in the meal for a minestrone or pasta is as a primo. But the recipes in my book reflect the reality that Italians (and certainly Americans) sometimes eat these dishes as a simple but well-balanced meal. In my view, if Alexandra and Tommaso eat friselle as a one-course meal, done deal--it's a piatto unico! I like friselle the way Laura describes, with just tomatoes and olive oil, but mozzarella and tuna are delicious too, so why not?

SLURP !!!

Hi, it depends where you stay. Mid May should not be too bad yet, depends how hot it gets how early. Last year by May I was already swimming in the sea and there were 30 degree (celcius) days! Hotels that are renovating now are starting to put screens on windows, something i would look for especially if i were staying anywhere within a few streets of the Arno. Enjoy your trip, and search arttrav for info as you plan - you might also join the facebook page, and ask questions there too!

Thank you for the detailed info! We are planning a trip to Florence in May and have been reading horror stories about mosquitoes. Will it be a huge problem in mid-may or do they wait for heat?

Thank you! Can't wait to explore Italy

Oops thanks francesca, you are quite right, at a glance i thought the photo was the side approach of the gallery, but it isn't! there were no good ones of the facade with creative commons' licenses, but I'm going to replace that right away. I will pass your thanks on to Steve, who wrote the post. AMK

fun article!

But, that picture's not the Borghese Gallery...I believe that's the Borghese Hotel that was once owned by the Borghese family as well...

And, thanks for the kind words on the audioguide...I produced it!

Very interesting! My view of Florence is so formed by what I experienced there more than a decade ago, so it's nice for me to learn about some new things happening there. The opera house looks beautiful.

I was everywhere in the world, but there is no such a place as Südtirol.
Nature shows us that we should forget all the fights we're fighting,
but realising that ours is a land of peace and freedom. These pictures
are not a fake, you have no idea how often it happens to me that I walk
around and suddenly I'm stunned by what I see... Greetings from a

Oh, thanks for reminding me, Francesca - I meant to say at the end of the post that people from other regions should write their menus in the comments! Calabria is not included because I don't have any close friends from there (nor the many other regions not in this post). I'd love to know what's on your family's table!

A dire il vero non mangeremo quanto indicato dato che il pranzo si farà a casa Rossi - De Benedetto... poveri suoceri !!! Qualcuno ha da indicarmi un menu d'effetto ma facile facile?! Non importa la regione.. Grazie in anticipo :-)

Actually we're not having all those delicious things as we will eat at Rossi - De Benedetto home at Xmas: poor parents in law! Any tip for a good but really easy menu? It doesn't matter the Italian region it comes from... Thanx in advance! :-)

So lovely to see such delicious renderings from Patrizia, the Laura's, Francesca, Enzo. Indeed you know a family through it's meals, especially at Christmas. I am doubly sorry now not to be in Italy with you at Christmas.

Hi Katerina
For now the blogger roundtable is just the five of us, it's something that Jessica started. In this occasion we extended the topic to all bloggers, and may do so again in the future. I don't think we're planning on expanding us knights at the moment, but keep an eye out for our hashtag, as we might, who knows.

Thank you H
Fact is, Renaissance fun doesn't come up every day in my life. Florence is a living city, not a Renaissance Disneyland as I once treated it, and as it has been criticized by many. While the Renaissance initially attracted me to this city, real life cannot happen in the past, but needs to interact with the modern city and in fact to move forward. So I guess this is now a driving theme both of my life and of this blog.

Thank you Katje, that is so sweet! I have always loved archival documents and renaissance texts. I am of course a huge Renaissance geek. I don't think i've read the Origo edit of Datini's diaries but I have read some of those documents and always thought Datini was fascinating. If you like these things I highly recommend the Letters of Alessandra Strozzi edited by Heather Gregory. Lots of family intruigue, including a marriage fix-up into the Datini family!

Alexandra,
I love this post. Thanks for all the research!

Reading your gift post made me think of Iris Origo's 'Merchant of Prato' (sadly out of print) - my all time favorite book about Tuscany.
Nothing made the Renaissance come more alive to me than reading through Francesco di Marco Datini's (the merchant's) diaries. Not that I would have had the guts to read through all of them, luckily Iris Origo had already picked out the cherries for me. That's exactly why we need clever, thorough and talented people like you!

Buone feste or Buon Natale (whatever comes closer to what the Medici would have said). Katja

What a terrific idea. So many wonderful places to take our kids. thanks for putting this together. I know dozens of friends who will be interested in this. Anybody that appreciates what Florence is all about will appreciate this.
