An expat news fix? Win digital magazine subscriptions from Zinio
When you’re living abroad, sometimes you get desperate for things you’re used to in your home country. Even after many years, I still crave cheddar cheese, which I occasionally find somewhere odd (recently it was at Lidl) and buy out a stock. I’m a pretty satisfied expat, I don’t miss much. Others stock up on things like peanut butter, ethnic ingredients, certain brands of tea or god knows what else – each of us has his or her own fixation.
So, when Zinio contacted me offering me 10 one-year digital magazine subcriptions to give away, and the nice lady said I could keep one for myself, all I could think was: “oh, yeah! The Economist for me!”
Sometimes I feel cut off from the rest of the world’s news. I know everything in the local cronaca because I write for a local paper, but frankly, I need some more in-depth analysis of what is happening right now in Turkey and Egypt, not to mention a less italian-government-controlled news outlet. It’s hard to find time at the computer to read news – I prefer to hold it in my hands, read on the couch (or in the bathroom – don’t you ?).
Zinio is the world’s largest online news stand. They have everything, even stuff in other languages. There’s fashion mags, international news analysis, photography, travel, parenting, crafting… you name it, they have it. They also offer a really good subscription deal called Z-pass: 5$ gets you your choice of 3 subscriptions and you can switch them out each month. So, other than my annual subscription to The Economist that I will treasure like gold, I would get a photography mag, something fashion for the beach, and something tech for my husband, and then switch it the following month so I don’t get sick of each magazine’s formulaic style by reading it every month for a year. (Do normal people analyse magazines’ structures or is it just me?) *Z-pass is currently only available to US customers, but they assure me they’re working on opening it up to the rest of the world ASAP!
I will be reading my mags on iPad but Zinio is cross-platform so you can use your winning subscriptions on iPad, iPhone, Android mobile phones and tablets, laptop or desktop, Nokia Lumia, Windows 8 and Kindle Fire.
