Firenze Suona Cotemporanea is the only festival in Italy that presents a repertoire of international contemporary classical music. Founded in 2008, it takes place annually within the exclusive stage of the Bargello courtyard, adding a layer of visual arts that has since been amplified with the inclusion of contemporary installations. The 2015 edition of the international event will take place September 9 to 22.

The 2015 program includes a lectio magistralis on September 9 at 6pm by philosopher and art historian Georges Didi-Huberman followed by the (sold-out) headline concert/installation by contemporary artist Jannis Kounellis with a specific on-site installation for Bargello Museum courtyard  that will be presented with a concert by Alter Ego Ensemble. Contemporary artist Alfredo Pirri will create a sound installation in the cloister of the Museo Novecento Firenze with musician Alvin Curran, which you can see performed on September 11 at 9pm, but will remain visible until October 31.

Firenze Suona Contemporanea is an example of international collaboration: on September 20, for example, a group from Frankfurt will perform a piece by Franz Schubert from the German romantic period combined with a composition of the Italian composer Andrea Cavallari within an installation from Spanish painter Mateo Vilagrasa. The installation “Die Winterreise” is made of 380 boxes, each consisting of a female torso, which is shown from two sides. The new composition will create a contrast to the composition of Franz Schubert in the themes of love, lonelyness and loss; it will be performed in Barcelona, Florence and Frankfurt. An example of this performance is in the (rather dark) video below.

Other music will be performed by Florence-based FLAME Ensemble, the Nordic Voices, trio 7090 and more.
