Whether you’re visiting the Uffizi Gallery for your first visit, or if you wish to learn more in depth about a Florentine theme like Michelangelo, or The Medici, the company I always recommend is Context Travel.
Context offers private and small group tours of Florence and other cities, with never more than 6 people (but usually 2-3), led by “docents” who have either a MA or PhD in the relevant field. Their “seminars” tend to be at the undergraduate level, though their docents of course adjust the walk based on your interests. While these tours cost rather more than the average, I find that they are worth it.
I take their tours wherever I go, and I always learn something. Here are my reports of some Context seminars that I’ve done in the past:
- The young Michelangelo in Florence
- The Medici in Florence
- Artisans in Florence near the Duomo
- Palace architecture in Rome
- The best way to experience the Borghese Gallery
- Caravaggio in Naples
- The town of Cantebury
