Here’s a funny sign in piazza Strozzi, on corner of building right above the used book vendor cart. It’s dated 1762.

Gl’Ill.mi SS. Capitani di Parte della Citta’ di Firenze in esecuzione di benigno rescritto di S. M. I del di’ 6 Ottobre 1762. Con il presente pubblico editto proibiscono a tutti i cocomerai poponai fruttaiuoli ferravecchi rivenditori e barulli e a qualunque altro genere di persone……di stare a vendere e rivendere frutte panni ferrivecchi e qualunque altra sorte di robe nella piazza degli Strozzi sotto pena a'[i] tragressori di lire cinque per ciascuno e ciascuna volta da applicarsi tutta agli esecutori che gli troveranno in fragranti con piu’ l’arbitrio del Magistrato Loro Ill.mo. E per provvedere al pubblico servizio dichiarano che per lo scarico e contrattazione de poponi cocomeri e altre frutte resta destinata la piazza Nuova di S.M. Novella che per d’uso ed effetto e’ stata surrogata a quella degli strozzi. Fatto in Firenze gli 13 Ottobre 1762. Urbano Urbani Canc.re.

English translation:

The illustrious captains of the ruling party of the city of Florence in execution of the law rewritten this day October 6 1762. With the present public edict they prohibit all watermelon vendors, melon vendors, used iron vendors and any other sort of person to sell and resell fruit clothing old iron and any other sort of stuff in the piazza degli Strozzi under pain of [fine to] transgressors of five lira for each and every time to apply entirely to transgressors who are caught in the act, plus the judgement of the His Illustrious. And in the interest of public service it is declared that for the unloading and hussling of melons, watermelons, and other fruit the piazza Nuova of Santa Maria Novella remains destined for this use, which for all intents and purposes has overtaken that of the Strozzi.
